Sailor killed in USS Fitzgerald previously lived on GuamWritten by Janela Carrera
Guam - One of the sailors killed in the USS Fitzgerald collision with a Philippine cargo ship had spent some time in Guam when he was stationed at Naval Base.
He is 24-year-old Xavier Alec Martin of Halethorpe, Maryland, who joined the US Navy in May 2012 and began reporting to the USS Fitzgerald in August 2016. The USS Fitzgerald is also a frequent visitor to Guam, having just stopped here in March this year.
The collision happened early Saturday morning off the coast of Yokosuka, Japan where the Fitzgerald was based out of. US Navy officials reported that the destroyer collided with a cargo ship and initially seven sailors were reported missing. Search and rescue efforts immediately commenced and a number of remains were recovered. The sailors were inside of berthing compartments of the ship that were flooded during the collision.
