Guam - Speaker Cruz talks legislative goals with the Rotary Club of Northern Guam.

Just two weeks after taking his post as the Speaker of the 34th Guam Legislature, Speaker B.J. Cruz spoke to members of the Northern Rotary Club to outline his plans moving forward.

Speaker Cruz told PNC that his address centers on saving the island money adding that it has always been his goal.

He reiterated his stance on savings again by discussing bill 3, which aims to choose the most economical health insurance option and shared that at the end of the day, he hopes lawmakers think critically about their bills and realize that there's only so much the legislature is appropriated in the general fund.

“The Guam Legislature, as was evident by the standing rules, we are going to try to as much as possible to try and control the spending and make sure that we don’t spend unnecessarily or to pass legislation that gives the authority to the governor to spend more money than we’re getting-- than we have because this deficit is continuing to grow and it's got to stop and the only way to be able to stop it is if we just stop passing bills that gives him the authority to spend money,” he said.

Other goals on his agenda include re-introducing his bill to raise the age for smoking tobacco to 21.
