Guam News - Community Events
The idea for Håfa Adai Fridays first emerged with a proclamation by the late Gov. Ricardo J. Bordallo, who sought to inspire residents to integrate locally inspired designs, colors, and accessories into their attire each week. More recently, Gov. Felix P. Camacho and the 28th Guam Legislature through executive order and legislative resolution proclaimed Fridays as Chamorro Spirit Day.
The goal is to encourage members of the business community and local residents to greet each other in the Chamorro language, play Chamorro music, eat Chamorro food, and wear attire or accessories that represent the Chamorro culture including the sinahi, a new moon pendant or a spondylus shell.
Many businesses that have signed the Håfa Adai Pledge, first launched on July 7, have incorporated the Håfa Adai Fridays initiative – now an element of the Guam Branding Initiative - into their individual commitments to promote the Chamorro culture.
“We’re excited about this fashion show for a number of reasons, mainly because it will show local people how to incorporate our island culture into their attire with accessories and clothing that goes beyond an island print,” said GVB Deputy General Manager Ernie A. Galito. “Håfa Addai Fridays is about more than just wearing a tropical shirt to work once a week. It’s an attitude, a spirit that represents our island, and Macy’s will showcase some great examples of how people can incorporate that into their clothing.”
Models including 2010 Miss Guam International Lalaine Mercado and 2010 Miss Guam Earth Naomi Santos will model several items from Macy’s fall line that embody the Håfa Adai Fridays spirit. The department store will feature options for casual, work, and evening wear attire.
The event will feature a raffle for buddy powered by iConnect cell phones and the grand prize of a complete ensemble (male or female) from Macy’s. Cultural performers, and arts & crafts will also be featured at the event.
