Senator Tommy Morrison presented a resolution today recognizing the month of May 2014 as “Lupus Awareness Month,” and commending the Lupus Awareness Group of Guam (LAGG) for their outstanding efforts in creating greater awareness and local support for the incurable disease.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system is imbalanced causing inflammation and tissue damage to every organ system in the body.  There is no known cure or cause for lupus and many patients have symptoms that prevent them from leading normal lives.

Morrison said, “Every year the month of May is reserved for lupus awareness in order to create awareness and support for individuals and families affected by lupus. As community leaders, it’s important that we support these individuals, their families, and the organizations that provide support.”

LAGG is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and advocating for those affected by Lupus. The organization was formed in April 2012 and has since been actively involved in various community events.  LAGG has created awareness and support with events to include sunset waves, “Put on Purple Day,” patient education activities, and the “Lupus, Living and Learning” symposium.

Senator Morrison thanked the Lupus Awareness Group of Guam, “Your mission to provide support, increase awareness, and advocate for individuals and families affected by lupus on Guam is admirable.”
