In celebration of this milestone event, a banquet will be held at the Micronesian Room of the Hilton Guam Resort where NASBA Board Chair, Carlos Johnson, CPA, Ph.D., will address attendees about the positive impact of NASBA’s presence on Guam for the past decade.
“More than 100 members of the community have been invited to the event, including local political figures, press and university affiliates,” said James Suh, Director, Continuous Improvement & Analytics, who will also be attending on NASBA’s behalf.
The Guam Computer Testing Center which administered the very first computer-based CPA Examination, was founded in order to accommodate local Guam CPA candidates, as well as to facilitate the high number of Asian students who were traveling to the U.S. to take the Uniform CPA Examination. “We were honored to administer the first computer-based CPA Exam ever,” says Penny Vernon, Manager of Candidate Care at NASBA.
Partnering with NASBA to open the Guam Computer Testing Center, the Guam Board of Accountancy was instrumental in its success. “During the first year of computerization, more CPA candidates sat for their Exam on Guam than at any other Prometric Test Center combined,” said Dave Sanford, Executive Director of the Guam Board of Accountancy. As a U.S. territory, Guam is the closest part of the U.S. to candidates in East Asia.
Since opening, the Center has grown to 10 employees and has expanded its services to offer multiple, high-stakes examinations covering a multitude of professions. Nearly 16,000 non-CPA candidates have taken exams administered at the Center in addition to the 24,600+ CPA Exam candidates sitting for more than 86,200 sections. As an extension of the Center, in 2011, the Guam Customer Service and Resource Center was opened, effectively expanding NASBA’s phone and email support for candidates to 16 hours per day.
Located just west of the International Date Line, and 15 hours ahead of Nashville, the Center has often been the first location for employing new testing methods and strategies.
According to Frank Boyle, District Manager with Prometric (provider of the computer-based exam), the Center’s reputation of excellence is second to none and is the benchmark of testing best practices. He says, “Since the introduction of TC|Score, a metric used to evaluate the effectiveness of our test centers, the Guam Computer Testing Center has maintained one of the highest scores of any testing center worldwide and continues to pass secret shops and DVR audits. Likewise, it garners consistently high ratings from candidate surveys.”
Patricia Hartman, Director of Client Services for NASBA, says the celebration is much deserved. “Ten years is an exceptional accomplishment for all involved,” she says. “As with any new business endeavor, there was much trepidation about surviving beyond the first month…Now the Guam Computer Testing Center is the gold standard in the testing world,” Hartman exclaims.
Celebrating more than 100 years of service, the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) serves as a forum for the nation’s Boards of Accountancy, which administer the Uniform CPA Examination, license more than 700,000 certified public accountants and regulate the practice of public accountancy in the United States.
NASBA’s mission is to enhance the effectiveness and advance the common interests of the Boards of Accountancy in meeting their regulatory responsibilities. The Association promotes the exchange of information among accountancy boards, serving the needs of the 55 U.S. jurisdictions.
