Guam News - Community Events

Guam - “Environmental literacy is the key to protecting Guam’s natural resources,” said Laura Biggs, scientist and University of Guam Sea Grant administrator. With that goal in mind, the UOG’s Western Pacific Coral Reef Institute (WPCRI), Sea Grant, and Professional and International Programs are partnering with Guam Department of Education to offer a free two-day Environmental Literacy Curriculum Institute workshop.

The workshop will be held 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, August 2 and 3 at the UOG Leon Guerrero School of Business and Public Administration Building.

“Along with UOG, we are working to develop a comprehensive, interactive, and place-based environmental literacy curriculum for Guam’s teachers and students,” said Eloise Sanchez, GDOE Division of Curriculum & Instructional Improvement school program consultant.

“This is part of our overarching strategy to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by partnering with teachers to strengthen our STEM curriculum.”

The workshop is free to science teachers from “Metgot” or Standards Based elementary schools as well as all public middle school science teachers. For a $20 recordation fee, teachers can earn one graduate credit for their participation in the workshop. Free kits and lesson plans will be provided.

The workshop will include discussion on what works in designing and integrating a new curriculum into the existing structure, resource networks, exchange of ideas, future training opportunities, and presentations by environmental practitioners.
