GTA Announces Improved Wireless Coverage

Guam News - Guam News

Guam - GTA TeleGuam Friday announced improvements to wireless coverage throughout the island with the launch of new cell sites, backhaul upgrades to increase capacity, and the use of a Cell On Wheels, or COW, to improve wireless service in the Naval Base and Santa Rita areas.
GTA TeleGuam is investing $10M in 2012 into its network to improve various services to include their wireless network by adding fiber backhaul to increase performance and capacity, increasing 3G coverage with additional cell sites, and improving in-building coverage in specific areas with distributed antenna systems.  These backhaul improvements will increase capacity on the wireless network by 400% on one-third of all of GTA’s 3G sites.

Newly activated cell sites have been activated in the Machananao, Sinajana and Southern Agat areas.  The Sinajana site will also provide improved coverage to the Chaot Bridge area and the Toto-Canada Loop.

“We remain committed to providing excellent coverage to all areas around the island including our military bases and the addition of these new cell sites, the recent backhaul upgrades, and the Cell On Wheels allows us to provide our wireless customers with improved service, better reception, and fewer dropped calls,” stated Andrew Gayle, GTA Chief Operating Officer.

Customers living in or traveling through the southern areas of Santa Rita and Naval Base Guam will now experience improved coverage made possible with the use of a portable cell site known as a Cell On Wheels, or COW.  The COW is a portable cellular antenna tower and electronic radio transceiver which is currently located off Route 5 in Santa Rita less than a mile away from the base and has been operational since July 14th.

“While we await approval to erect a tower at Orote, the COW allows us to provide improved service to the Naval Base and surrounding areas until a new permanent site is finalized and constructed,” Gayle said.  “Once completed, the COW can be deployed elsewhere for special events and large gatherings, or used to provide relief in additional coverage areas while permanent sites are being constructed.  We will continue to make improvements to our network throughout the year to continue to provide the best possible service to our customers,” Gayle concluded.
