GDOE Superintendent Announces School Beautification Day - “GDOE: Team Up to Clean Up 2012” SATURDAY

Guam News - Community Events

Guam - Guam Department of Education Superintendent Jon Fernandez has designated Saturday, August 18 as “Team Up to Clean Up Day 2012” for the island’s public school system. Volunteers from the community are being asked to join GDOE “Clean Teams” to help paint, clean, and spruce up each of Guam’s 40 public schools in preparation for the coming school year.

"We want this to be a community-wide effort to welcome our children and their families to the new school year," said Superintendent Fernandez. "What better way to show our welcome than to join hands in working together to spruce up our schools. I want to let our students know that we are excited to have them here and that we are committed to helping them learn and succeed."

As part of school year preparations, government agencies have already stepped up to adopt individual schools.  Employees from these agencies will work with GDOE and school principals to coordinate work in the weeks prior to school opening.

"I want to thank Governor Eddie Calvo for taking the initiative to have government agencies help out at each school," said Superintendent Fernandez. "We are now working jointly to reach out to our mayors, the business community, and the general public for additional volunteers and support."

Business, civic and military groups wishing to volunteer are asked to contact Robb Malay, Acting Deputy Superintendent, Educational Support & Community Learning, at 300-1631 or 1536 or via email deputy_escl@gdoe.net. Parent groups, families, alumni, students and individuals should call their respective schools.
