The students of Southern High School will have their fine arts auditorium back up and running over the next year. Governor Calvo today signed the contract to fix the state-of-the-art auditorium.
“These kids have waited too long for this, so I’m very happy today that we’re finally able to move forward,” Superintendent Jon Fernandez said.
The project will use $3.6 million in (formerly ARRA) trust funds to renovate the auditorium and make it usable again.
“I’m so grateful to the Governor for signing this contract,” Southern High School Principal James Petitte said. “This is not only good for our Southern High students, it will be good for the people of the south and the people of Guam.”
Petitte said the auditorium can be used after school and on weekends by the community for performances, auditions, and practices.
“We really need to increase music and arts in our schools and make them strong parts of the curriculum,” Governor Calvo said. “This is a good day.”
The DOE Deputy Superintendent of Education for Educational Support and Community Learning Robb Malay said the construction should take 240 days once DOE issues the notice to proceed.
The Governor is waiting for other ARRA contract projects, including the contracts for the Southern High School gym, and roof repairs at other schools.
