Guam - The deep seeded fire in Yigo that broke out last week Tuesday continues to burn.

The Yigo Mayor's Office and the Guam Environmental Protection Agency have been monitoring the area, which is still producing smoke. It is still not clear if any toxins are released into the air from this fire.

Guam EPA Spokesperson Tammy Jo Anderson Taft says their inspectors are collecting photos, records and interviews to start a Notice Of Violation (NOV) process. They do believe illegal materials have been dumped there. However, she says the NOV process will take time as they research if any Guam laws and Guam EPA regulations are being violated.

“Our solid waste program right now is working on completing their investigation of that situation in Yigo that has the deep seeded fire” said Taft. “And once they have a complete investigation and a full set of information, they'll be working in comparing that next to Guam law and determining if a Notice Of Violation will be filed.”

Taft notes a definite cause must first be established for an NOV to be issued. Meanwhile, the fire continues to burn between the illegal dump property of Joseph Taitano and Route 15. The Guam Fire Department (GFD) also continues to find an access point to control the area, which is situated by a cliff side.
