Guam Police Department Receives $239,537 for Three Officer Positions
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 26, 2012 – Washington, D.C. –

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today announced that the Guam Police Department was awarded $239,537 from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) to hire or rehire three career law enforcement officers for a period of three years.

These funds were awarded through the Fiscal Year 2012 COPS Hiring Program, which provides funds directly to law enforcement agencies to advance public safety through community policing by addressing the full-time sworn officer needs of state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies nationwide. The FY12 program includes a unique change for any new hire positions, requiring grantees to hire a military veteran who has served after 9/11 for a period of no less than 180 days and has been honorably discharged.

“The funding received today will help bolster the Guam Police Department’s policing capacity and crime prevention efforts,” said Congresswoman Bordallo. “The COPS Hiring Program demonstrates the federal government’s commitment to supporting law enforcement in our local community, and works to keep trained, experienced officers in constant rotation.

“Further, I appreciate that the COPS program will benefit our Post-9/11 veterans who are coming home to a less than favorable job market. This program will provide our returning veterans with an opportunity for gainful employment, and will help improve public safety efforts on Guam.”
