GPA: No Commercial Accounts Will Be Disconnected Until Impact of Recent Rate Hike Has Been Analyzed

Guam News - Guam News

Guam - The Guam Power Authority says that no past due commercial account will be disconnected until the impact of the recent base rate hike on commercial customers has been analyzed, reviewed and adjusted, if necessary.

The statement was released Monday afternoon in response to Senator Tom Ada's call for a postponement of any termination of commercial power accounts because of complaints from a number of commercial power customers about big increases int heir bills.

Senator Adda has scheduled an information briefing for Thursday evening at 6:30 to look into the substantial increases in power bills that have hit a number of commercial customers.

In its release GPA General Manager John Benavente said they are aware of the recently approved base rate increase "has resulted in substantially higher" bills for some commercial customers.

Benevente said that GPA is "reviewing the breadth of the impact to these customers to determine what appropriate alternatives are available to help mitigate this matter"  and he concludes that "during this time, no accounts within the Schedules indicated will be disconnected during this review/correction period until the corrections are properly analyzed and corrected."

GPA STATEMENT ON INFORMATIONAL BRIEF REGARDING COMMERCIAL RATES

General Manager for Consolidated Utility Services John Benavente provided this statement regarding the Informational Brief scheduled for this Thursday with the Committee on Utilities chaired by Senator Tom Ada:

We are aware that the recently approved base rate adjustment has resulted in substantially higher demand rates for some of our customers.

The customers most affected by this change are those within the Schedule J, K, L and P. These rate schedules are typically your commercial or large customer classes that would also include government accounts. The estimated number of customer accounts affected is approximately 3% of our total customer base.

GPA is currently reviewing the breadth of the impact to these customers to determine what appropriate alternatives are available to help mitigate this matter. In the meantime, I encourage those customers within the rate schedule of J, K, L and P to contact our Customer Service Department if they have any questions at 647-5787.

We will have more information during an informational briefing tentatively scheduled for this Thursday evening at which time we will make these alternatives known to the public.

During this time, no accounts within the Schedules indicated will be disconnected during this review/correction period until the corrections are properly analyzed and corrected.
