VIDEO: GMH Unveils New $70K Sterilization Unit

Guam News - Guam News

Guam- Guam Memorial Hospital (GMH) now has a state of the art sterilizer to improve its services in the Operating Room.

GMH Volunteers Association Chairperson Dorothy Borlas, the Sterrad NX System was purchased by the GMH Volunteers Association through funds raised at their events and annual charity ball drive.

The device is worth over $70 thousand dollars. The enhanced sterilization unit is needed to sterilize medical instruments and equipment. O-R Supervisor Lester Whitley says aside from reducing the risks of surgical infection, the equipment will allow them to do twice as many endoscopic procedures.

“We started in December. It happened in April 2012” said Borlas. “At the same time, as the money was coming in, we started to tell the administrator we could go ahead and purchase the equipment.”

What this machine is going to do for us is it's going to cut the processing time in half” said Whitley. “What normally takes about 45 minutes to do the processing, the way we do it now, this machine will cut it down to 24 minutes.”

A special presentation of the new equipment was held at the GMH front lobby.
