1,114 persons were counted living without shelter this year, and 187 persons were reported as living in sub-standard homes, Guam Homeless Coalition Chair Shelly Calvo told members of the Rotary Club of Northern Guam Monday.

Last year a total of 1,789 homeless persons were counted during the point-in-time count which is conducted at the end of January each year.

During the count, volunteers connect individuals to services to give them access to medical and dental checkups and programs to help them find housing and employment. Care bags are also handed out each year and Calvo says the coalition is already looking for donations for next years care bags.

“It would be necessities, daily essentials that our unfortunate brothers and sisters can use everyday,” said Calvo. “We normally put in pop top canned goods, beverages, towels, slippers, blankets, umbrellas would be great or panchos.”

Donated goods can be dropped off at Oxygen in Agana. For more information call 473-0202 or 888-0202.
