Guam News - Community Events

Guam -  The Guam Chinese School Foundation will hold the Guam leg of “Torch of Peace” Relay on August 27,  Saturday at the Skinner’s Plaza in conjunction with its 2011 Splendid 100 5K Run. A short ceremony to hand over the torch by Mr. Fong Wu and Mrs. Meilih Huang will be held about 10 minutes before the 5K race time of 6:00 AM. Mr. Fong Wu, Commissioner of the Overseas Compatriots Affairs Commission in Guam and Mrs. Meilih Huang brought back Guam’s torch from Hawaii. The first leg of the “Torch of Peace” relay took place last March 29, 2011 in Honolulu, Hawaii, where China’s founding father Dr. Sun Yat-sen established the Revive China Society on Nov. 24, 1894, and began the revolutions that led to the birth of the Republic of China (R.O.C.).  Over 400 people, including representatives from R.O.C. centennial celebration committees and overseas Chinese organizations worldwide gathered in Honolulu to light the torch. The globetrotting nature of the event reflects in part the epic journey taken by Sun, revolutionaries and supporting overseas Chinese worldwide in their struggle to overthrow the Ching Dynasty and establish Asia's first republic.

After the torch relay in Guam,  the torch will to be carried to Taiwan by representatives of the Guam Chinese community, to join more than 100 cities around the globe. The torch will then tour Taiwan in a one-week round-the-island relay and then reach its final destination — the “United Hearts” rally at the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei — on Oct. 9, the day before the centenary of the Wuchang Uprising and the founding of the Republic of China.

Torch holders on the Torch of Peace relay is by invitation only, but the public is welcome to join the holders in their relay runs and to sign up on the 5K Run. Pre-race day registration is $6.00/person, $20.00/family of 4 and $10.00/person on race day.  Pre-registration are available at Hornet Sporting Goods,  Chinese School in Upper Tumon, Huang’s Bakeshop in Maite and Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Sunny Plaza, Tamuning.    Prizes for raffle includes a round trip ticket via China Airlines to On-Line Destinations in Asia, GTA Blackberry Cellphone, and Night Stay at the Aurora Resort & Spa in Tumon.  The 5K Run is being assisted by the Guam Track and Field Association, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Guam, United Chinese Association of Guam, Guam Chinese School Board and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Guam.
