Guam - The University of Guam hosts the Guam Soil Carbon Sequestration Conference on August 4 as part a multi-state research meeting on soils.

“The focus of the conference is how to sequester carbon dioxide in the soil and ensure it is not released into the air by using a variety of methods,” said Mohammad Golabi, UOG soil science professor. “This process helps off-set fossil fuel emissions from vehicles, for example, and enhances soil quality and crop production.”

The keynote speak is R. Lal from the Ohio State University’s Carbon Management and Sequestration Center who will present under the topic “Understanding the Mechanisms and Processes of Soil Carbon Dynamics”. Other topics will be presented by academics and specialists from the University of Illinois; Iowa State University; University of Wisconsin-Madison; South Dakota State University; the Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Nanjing, China; the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Guam; Tarbiat Modares University in Iran; the University of Missouri; Palau Community College-Cooperative Research and Extension; and the Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences in Hawaii.

The conference begins at 9:00 a.m. and will be held in the School of Business and Public Administration Building, Anthony Leon Guerrero multipurpose room. The conference is free to UOG faculty, staff and students and members of the public who are not officially registered. For a detailed list of topics and presenters visit www.uog.edu.
