But there are many costs associated with keeping the Scouts going, including: camp maintenance, professional staff, recruiting materials, office supplies, and training expenses – to name a few. The Friends of Scouting – under the leadership of Ms. Lou Leon Guerrero, President and CEO of Bank of Guam – is making sure their mission remains alive and strong by undertaking the important role as this year’s chairperson of the Friends of Scouting effort.

The Friends of Scouting plan to raise at least $40,000 through corporate sponsorships and various planned fundraising activities to get the community involved. According to Lou Leon Guerrero, “Scouting is valuable to our youth and our community in general, which is why we’re committed to raise funds through various fundraising activities planned over the next few months.” Local businesses can also make a contribution to the organization by contacting Lou Leon Guerrero at 472-5271. The planned fundraising activities include:
1. Brunch for the Boys - Sunday, August 7th at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
The brunch will feature magician Anthony Reed and Ukelele player Bobby Alvarez. The Boy Scouts of Guam will also be doing live demonstrations and be available for questions or sign-up. Call Shamra at 472-5271 or Racine at 472-5273 to purchase tickets for $40
2. 5K Scout Relay – Saturday, September 17th
3. The Scout’s Golf Tournament – October TBD
District Executive of the Guam Boy Scouts of America, Derek Cepeda is encouraged by the overwhelming support of its volunteers. “Through the public’s support of fundraising activities they can be proud that they are making a positive change in the lives of our young men by playing a major role in preparing them to become the future leaders of our island,” says Derek. In addition to raising monies for the Boy Scouts, Derek hopes the effort will raise awareness for the value of the Boy Scouts and the need for more scout leader volunteers. For more information on how to become a Boy Scout or to volunteer as a scout leader, contact Derek Cepeda at 649-0639 or visit the Boy Scouts office on Marine Drive across from J.F.K. High School.
