Takeshi Fujiwara and colleagues at the waste management department at Okayama University and tour the city’s incinerator, composting facility, fermentation plant, and landfills.
“We examined some of the characteristics and were fascinated by the technologically advanced landfills, incinerators, and composting operation sites,” said Golabi. “We visited a bioconversion plant where organic waste is being fermented for methane gas production, and then stored and used as fuel to power the plant’s electric generator.”
“Okayama University’s waste management program has a strong international focus, and we learned about studies conducted in Taiwan and Vietnam as well as within Japan,” said Rasmussen.
In cooperation with Golabi, and UOG Professor Kirk Johnson, Professor Fujiwara and his student Eri Ito are planning to conduct a comprehensive study of solid waste management on Guam. The first step in their research is to recruit graduate and undergraduate students to survey households, hotels, and restaurants on Guam about the content of their waste. The researchers and their students will then create a model of consumption and waste production habits that will be used to predict future waste generation on Guam.
In addition to his academic research, Dr. Fujiwara hopes to facilitate contact between Okayama City waste management officials and Guam officials.
The University of Guam and Okayama University have signed a cooperative agreement which supports this and other activities.
