VIDEO: Congressman Sablan Says Air Force to Build Divert Airfield on Saipan, Tinian Mayor Disappointed

Guam News - Guam News

Saipan - The establishment of an alternative airfield on Saipan is imminent, as the U.S. Air Force seems to be keen on building it on the island.

Delegate Gregorio Kilili Sablan told Saipan Tribune, citing communication from the U.S. Department of the Air Force Office of Legislative Liaison, that the Air Force still prefers to build the divert airfield on Saipan. He added that “the phases cannot be separated between two different locations” such as Saipan and Tinian.

Under the plan, the Air Force will designate Saipan as the “preferred Alternative 1” for a divert or contingency airfield in support of expanding its mission requirements in the western Pacific in the event that access to Guam’s Andersen Air Force Base is limited or denied.

Tinian Mayor Ramon Dela Cruz said he is “very disappointed” with the Air Force’s decision to build the divert airfield on Saipan. Two-thirds of the island is already leased by the U.S. Department of Defense.
