Moe Cotton, Says He's Still Running for Legislature, as an Independent Write-In

Guam News - Guam News

Guam -  Moe Cotton, who was the only candidate eliminated in the September 1st Primary election, has announced that he is running as a write-in candidate for the Legislature in Tuesday's General Election..

Cotton's campaign attracted some notoriety during the Primary campaign because he posted a sign outside his Tamuning real estate office which said "Pick Moe Cotton."

Some suggested the sign was racist because, in some minds, it conjured up images of black slaves in the old south picking cotton. Cotton said it was not racist.

The sign however did attract attention, and when it was posted on the Internet, it got more than a half million hits. But that did little good for Cotton's campaign. He finished 16th, last on the GOP Primary ballot.

This time he says he is running as an independent, rather than a republican.

Yes, I lost in the Primary election. There were 7279 Republican Voters.  I got 2571 of them. That's 36%.  If you want verification  Google Guam Election Commission Election Results.  Plus there was another 2369 cross over voters. Many  of them voted for our Congresswoman (D) and me (R). (VOTES LOST)  I know because I asked them. By the way that was 36 % was pretty good, considering I was called a racist, raised no money and spent none except for one sign) , The press printed a negative article about my traffic violation 11 years ago, plus I had my one sign was stolen, and with the exception of The Big Show and PNC I couldn't get my message out.

I really didn't think I needed to as I expected to get past the Primary.  Wrong.  My mistake was running as a Republican.  If I had run as a Democrat I would have had the top vote getter, our Congresswoman. on my side. That would have given me 7866 additional possible voters to vote for me. She got more votes than all the voters for Republicans put together.  So if they voted for her they couldn't vote for me or if the did vote for me it was a cross over. either way I was out of luck.  I was really counting on the women's club votes but since MB is Honorable Member of practically all of then my guess is the women felt our Congresswoman was more important than me. Me too.

That being said, I accept coming in 16th and being removed from the General Election because that is the law.  However, the law should be changed.  Why,? It cost $250,000 (information from the Director  GEC) and what did the people of Guam get? We got  one Senator candidate removed - ME. Is this a good way for the Gov Guam to spend our tax money? This is a Party selection system that should be done by the party not paid for by the Guam Tax payer. So, I will fight to change this ridiculous system.

Also I will fight for a part time volunteer legislators.  That would save us over $8 million a year. There are only four states that have full time Legislators;  like NY and California with 26 million population. Do we really need full time politicians for  our small population? Voting for a part time Senator makes more sense than voting for career politicians.  Also why is the Government spending millions on rent when it could take that money and buy or build a building thus creating an asset for Guam, not a liability.  Hawaii did it.  And why does our Government not create something on Hospital Point, and get some income rather than always talking about cutting expenses. I could go on and on.

I have made Guam my home for 35 years and I would like to give something back. The people of Guam deserves better. If I was a Senator I would vote the issues, not a party line.  I will be INDEPENDENT not Republican or Democrat! Both the Write In and being an Independent would be a first for Guam. But real significient change has to start somewhere.   But I need your help.
